What is Somatic Experiencing®?

Somatic Experiencing ® (SE) is a form of therapy with emphasis on the here-and-now, aiming to assist the client to release pressure caused by stress or trauma experienced, through focusing on his perceived body sensations. With then, the client can resume self-regulation, restore original resilience of the nervous system, and improve mental and physical health.

Somatic Experiencing ® is introduced by Dr. Peter Levine. He holds PhDs in Medical Biophysics and Psychology. In the past forty years, he has always been a pioneer in the field of trauma healing. Because of his outstanding contribution, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 by the United States Association for Body Psychotherapy.

Theory:
When people encounter dangerous or very stressful situation, survival energy will naturally be activated. When the danger has passed and the residual energy fails to dissipate timely, it may leave memories in the body, which will interfere with the operation of the nervous system. This will result with symptoms, affecting all aspects of mental, emotional and spiritual health.

How is the process of treatment?
Treatment will be conducted in face-to-face interviews. The client will be directed to pay attention to his body sensations, to help him consciously aware of his own internal and external resources. The purpose is to provide him a safe experience. Then, the client will be guided by the therapist to touch bit by bit on tolerable painful experience, and to alternate between pleasant and unpleasant sensory feelings, emotions or images. During this process, excess energy stuck in the nervous system can be released, and a more healthy state can be restored.
